Wabo Majavu, Executive Strategy and Business Operations at Africa Data Centres and board member of Angel-A Collective
Innovation is more than a buzzword for Wabo Majavu—it's a mission. As a board member of the Angel-A Collective, a network of over 300 C-suite technology leaders committed to accelerating technology adoption in Africa, Majavu brings her extensive experience in telecommunications, data centers, and digital transformation to the forefront of Africa's tech revolution.
Innovation plays a significant role in human evolution and self-preservation. As the technology landscape evolves with unprecedented leaps in knowledge and data processing, smarter systems compel civilization to provide access to the right tools to a wider and much larger part of the population where innovation can start at community level and scale. It is an opportunity for Africa to reset and build the digital future we want.
From Engineer to Executive: A Career Dedicated to Technology Advancement
Currently serving as Executive Strategy and Business Operations at Africa Data Centres, Majavu has accumulated an impressive portfolio of senior leadership positions throughout her career. Her journey began in research at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), where she led the development of cognitive network systems, followed by RAN planning and optimization at MTN.
Her leadership roles have spanned both public and private sectors, including positions as General Manager for Engineering at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Market Advisor at Intelsat focusing on connectivity solutions for Africa, Middle East, and Asia Pacific, and Head of Product Management and Network Management Systems at SENTECH.
With a strong educational background in electrical engineering, including a BEng.Hons from Petronas Universiti Malaysia and an MSc.Eng from Witwatersrand University, Majavu combines technical expertise with strategic vision in her approach to technology development.
The Silver Bullet for Scale: Localization and Community Empowerment
At the core of Majavu's philosophy is a commitment to technological solutions that are developed with local contexts in mind.
'The silver bullet is localization—teaching tech to local communities in native languages to solve problems. Scaling can involve repurposing, but the real innovators are those closest to the problem, and language plays a significant role'. This approach aligns perfectly with her personal mission of breaking down barriers for women in tech and ensuring no African is left behind in the continent's digital economy. Majavu believes in repositioning Africa from consumerism to producers of digital applications, a transformation she actively works toward in her various roles.
Digital Inclusion as an Economic Enabler
Beyond her corporate roles, Majavu has established herself as a thought leader in digital inclusion. She founded WiTech Africa, a women-owned digital portal that enables access to markets and funding for small to medium enterprises, creating a business exchange and collaboration platform that promotes funding access for female-led startups and skills development.
Her YouTube channel, "Tech Simplified with Wabo," has built a community engaging with small to medium business owners seeking access to international markets and technology for scaling their businesses. This initiative demonstrates her commitment to making technology accessible and practical for entrepreneurs across Africa.
Collaboration as the Differentiator
Majavu sees the Angel-A Collective as "one of the platforms that has innovation for Africa at the core of its values." She appreciates the collective's wealth of experience and its potential "to be at the forefront of structuring projects that will drive impact in each of our areas."
Her vision for the collective aligns with her broader professional goal: leveraging technology to transform African communities from consumers to producers of technology. "Tech is deep and wide," she notes, "and as a collective, collaboration will be the differentiator."
Building Africa's Digital Future
As Majavu continues to shape Africa's digital landscape through her various roles, her focus remains clear: enabling technological transformation that bridges the digital divide and creates economic inclusion across the continent. With her expertise in data centers, telecommunications, and digital strategy, combined with her passion for empowering women in technology, Wabo Majavu stands as a powerful advocate for an Africa where technology serves as a tool for inclusive growth and opportunity.
Her mantra, "The day I stop trying is the day I stop breathing. We will have easy for dessert," encapsulates the determined spirit with which she approaches her mission of technological transformation for Africa.
